Sharefax Credit Union GPS Points of Interest (POI) FAQs Updated Feb 2010!
This FAQ assumes that you are knowledgeable with operating a GPS unit with a computer, USB interface cable and Points of Interest (POI) files. For more information on operating your particular GPS unit with a computer and adding Point of Interests (POI) files to your particular device, please see your GPS manufacturer’s website for more detailed information.
The Garmin and Tom Tom installation instructions are provided as an example of how a typical setup is performed. For more detailed information on installing POI files for your supported GPS device, please visit your GPS unit manufacturer’s website.
Garmin Devices
Download and install Garmin’s POI Loader. (please note that some older Garmin models may not be compatible with this software. Make sure to reference the Garmin site for compatibility and additional reference if necessary before installing this software.)
Create a new folder on your computer (i.e. Sharefax CU POI) and download the
Sharefax_POIs_Garmin_SelfExtractor.exe file by clicking on the filename and running the Self Extracting Zip file.
Save the files within the Self Extracting Zip file (will contain .CSV and .BMP files) into your new folder.
Connect your Garmin Device via the USB interface cable and launch the Garmin POI Loader software. (In most cases, simply connecting your Garmin compatible unit to your computer with the power on will automatically open the POI Loader.)
POI Loader will prompt you for the location of the POI files. Navigate to the folder on your computer with the downloaded files (from Step 2 and Step 3).
For each of the files, you then can select either English or Metric system, (Feet and MPH or Meters and Kilometers.) You can then select "Express" download or "Manual" download. Express will automatically send the POI's into the unit and in the case of Speed zone POI's will determine from the specific speed alert, the distance at where the alert will sound. The higher the speed, the greater the distance of when the alert will sound. If you select "Manual" you can specify the speed and distance. You will be prompted for each file and if you want to set either speed or distance alerts. When you are finished, you then press "next" and the POI's will automatically be downloaded into your Garmin unit. A message will indicate how many POI's were loaded onto your unit. The maximum proximity distance you can set in the "manual" mode is 37 miles.
You are now ready to begin using the Sharefax CU Points of Interests file to locate Sharefax CU Branches, Sharefax CU Shared Branches, Free
PNC ATMs, and surcharge-free Alliance One ATMs! Garmin’s POI loader converts CSV files to a proprietary Garmin format (GPI), which is compatible with most Garmin devices. To find the POIs on your GPS device, choose "Where to" > "Extras" > "Custom POIs" > then choose from the list, or choose "All Available". The closest POI will display first.
Create a new folder on your computer (i.e. Sharefax CU POI) and download the
Sharefax_POIs_TomTom_SelfExtractor.exe file by clicking on the filename and running the Self Extracting Zip file.
Save the files within the Self Extracting Zip file (will contain .OV2 and .BMP files) into your new folder.
Connect your Tom Tom via the USB interface cable and browse to your Maps directory on the Tom Tom GPS unit (normally named, “USA and Canada,” etc.) and copy the files you saved on your computer to this directory.
Once the files are copied completely, disconnect your Tom Tom and restart it.
You will now see the Sharefax CU POI listed in the Custom POI group listed alphabetically.
